Geophagus brasiliensis
Common name: Brazilian Cichlid, Pearl Cichlid
Origin: South America (native to the rivers and streams of Brazil, including the Paraná, São Francisco, and the Rio de la Plata basin)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.0 - 7.5 pH
200 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 20 - 30 cm
Diet: Geophagus brasiliensis are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, along with vegetable matter like spinach or zucchini. They also benefit from foraging on the substrate, where they sift for food like small invertebrates and plant matter.
Tankmates: Semi-aggressive species such as larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, barbs, and catfish. Geophagus brasiliensis can be territorial, particularly during breeding, so provide plenty of hiding spaces and territories. Keeping them in pairs or small groups is ideal, but avoid keeping them with overly aggressive or much smaller species.
