Iriatherina werneri
Common name: Threadfin Rainbowfish
Origin: Papua New Guinea and parts of northern Australia (native to freshwater streams and rivers)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
100 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 4 - 5 cm
Diet: Iriatherina werneri are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They can be fed high-quality flake food, small pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They also appreciate plant-based foods like spirulina and algae, as well as blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini.
Tankmates: These rainbowfish are peaceful and do well with other small, peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, small catfish, and livebearers. They should be kept in schools of at least 6 individuals to encourage natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. Avoid housing them with large or aggressive fish that could intimidate them.
Note: Iriatherina werneri is well-known for its elegant appearance, especially the long, flowing fins of the males, which resemble delicate threads. The males’ iridescent blue and silver bodies are particularly striking in the right lighting. These fish are active swimmers and do best in a well-planted aquarium with plenty of open space for swimming. They thrive in groups and will display their most vibrant colors when kept in a school.
