Julidochromis dickfeldi
Common name: Dickfeld's Julie
Origin: East Africa (native to Lake Tanganyika, particularly in rocky areas of the southern regions of the lake)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
7.5 - 9.0 pH
150 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 7 - 9 cm
Diet: Julidochromis dickfeldi are carnivores and primarily feed on small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they should be offered high-quality cichlid pellets, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They can also eat small fish or crustaceans and should be supplemented with occasional plant matter such as algae or spirulina to ensure a balanced diet.
Tankmates: These cichlids are territorial, especially during breeding. They do best in species-specific tanks or with other peaceful Lake Tanganyika cichlids that are similarly sized, such as Neolamprologus or Cyprichromis species. Keeping them with other aggressive fish may result in territorial disputes. It's best to house them in pairs or small groups, but be mindful of their need for space and hiding spots.
Note: Julidochromis dickfeldi is known for its distinctive, elongated body and striking coloration, which typically includes a silvery or yellowish body with dark markings and a unique eye stripe. This species is highly territorial, particularly around breeding sites, and prefers aquariums with plenty of rocks and crevices where they can hide and establish territories. They thrive in stable water conditions that mimic their natural Lake Tanganyika habitat.
