Julidochromis maleri
Common name: Maleri Rock Cichlid
Origin: East Africa (native to Lake Tanganyika, particularly the rocky shorelines of the Maleri Islands)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
7.5 - 9.0 pH
150 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 8 - 10 cm
Diet: Julidochromis maleri are carnivorous and primarily feed on small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they can be fed high-quality cichlid pellets, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Occasional plant matter like algae or spirulina can also be added to their diet for variety.
Tankmates: These cichlids are territorial, particularly during breeding, so they do best in species-specific tanks or with other peaceful, similarly sized Lake Tanganyika cichlids such as Neolamprologus or Cyprichromis species. They can be kept with other non-aggressive fish, but it’s important to avoid larger, more dominant species that could stress or intimidate them. Keeping them in pairs or small groups works best, but make sure to provide plenty of hiding spaces and territories.
Note: Julidochromis maleri is known for its attractive appearance, with a slender body, silver or yellowish coloration, and distinctive dark markings. The males display vibrant colors, particularly during breeding. These cichlids are rock-dwelling and thrive in aquariums with lots of rocks and caves for hiding, as well as sandy substrate. Their territorial nature makes them fascinating but also requires careful planning for tank setup.
