Common name: Transcriptus Julie
Origin: East Africa (native to Lake Tanganyika, particularly in the rocky shorelines and caves of the lake)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
7.5 - 9.0 pH
100 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 6 - 8 cm
Diet: Julidochromis transcriptus are carnivores, and their diet should consist of high-quality cichlid pellets, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They can also accept small invertebrates and occasionally algae or spirulina-based foods. A balanced diet with a variety of protein-rich foods is essential for their health.
Tankmates: These cichlids are territorial, especially during breeding, and should be kept with other peaceful species, preferably from Lake Tanganyika. They can be housed with other small cichlids, such as Neolamprologus or Cyprichromis, but should not be kept with large or aggressive fish that could outcompete or bully them. They do best in a species-specific tank or with other non-aggressive tankmates. It’s best to provide plenty of rocks and caves for hiding and territorial behavior.
Note: Julidochromis transcriptus is one of the more peaceful and smaller species within the Julidochromis genus. They are known for their striking appearance, with a silvery or yellowish body marked by dark vertical stripes and a distinctive pattern on their face. This species is a rock-dweller, thriving in aquariums with a rocky layout that mimics their natural habitat. These cichlids are best kept in pairs or small groups, but they need their own space to establish territories.
