Lamprologus ocellatus
Common name: Ocellated Lamprologus / Ocellatus Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
7.5 - 9.0 pH
75 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 6 - 7 cm
Diet: The Ocellated Lamprologus is primarily a carnivore and should be fed a varied diet rich in protein. In captivity, it will thrive on high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and krill. It may also eat smaller invertebrates and some plant matter, so offering occasional blanched vegetables or algae wafers can supplement their diet. To keep them in optimal health, provide a high-protein diet, which is essential for their growth and coloration.
Tankmates: Lamprologus ocellatus is a relatively small, territorial cichlid and works best in species-only tanks or with other similar-sized, peaceful species. They can be kept with other Tanganyikan cichlids that are not too aggressive, such as smaller species of Neolamprologus or Julidochromis. Since they are territorial, it’s best to provide them with plenty of rock structures, caves, and shells where they can establish their own space. They are best kept in pairs or small groups, as keeping a single fish may cause stress. Avoid housing them with larger or more aggressive fish that may intimidate them.
Note: Lamprologus ocellatus is a striking, small cichlid native to Lake Tanganyika, famous for its unique, shell-dwelling behavior. It often inhabits shells, where it will take refuge and breed. This species has a distinct appearance, featuring a golden-yellow body with dark spots or ocelli on its sides, which gives it the name "Ocellatus." While it is not difficult to care for, it does require a stable, well-maintained environment with soft, alkaline water and plenty of hiding spaces. These cichlids are best suited for aquariums designed to mimic their natural habitat, with plenty of shells or small caves.
