Megalechis throcata
Common name: Black marble hoplo
Origin: South America (native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins, specifically in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
80 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 15 - 20 cm
Diet: Megalechis thoracata is primarily an omnivore and enjoys a varied diet. In captivity, it should be fed high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. It also benefits from live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. This catfish is also known to scavenge and will feed on detritus and leftover food in the tank. It is important to provide a well-rounded diet to keep it healthy and vibrant, especially since it may spend much of its time grazing on biofilm and algae in the aquarium.
Tankmates: Megalechis thoracata is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling catfish that does well in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. It can be kept with other peaceful catfish, such as Corydoras, as well as small to medium-sized community fish like tetras, rasboras, and barbs. However, it is best to avoid aggressive or overly territorial fish that may harass it. As a bottom-dweller, it enjoys a tank with plenty of hiding places such as caves, driftwood, and rocks. Since it’s a nocturnal species, it will appreciate areas to retreat to during the day. This catfish also benefits from soft to slightly acidic water and a well-maintained aquarium environment.
Note: The Tiger Shovelnose Catfish, also known as Megalechis thoracata, is a peaceful and hardy species, easily recognized by its striking black and white striped pattern, which resembles that of a zebra. These catfish are active scavengers and can be quite entertaining to watch as they forage for food. While they are generally peaceful, they do best in a well-maintained tank with ample space, as they are relatively large for a catfish. Providing plenty of hiding spots and a stable environment with a varied diet is essential for their long-term health and well-being.
