Diet: Melanochromis auratus is an omnivorous species that will thrive on a varied diet. In captivity, it should be fed high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They also appreciate occasional vegetable matter such as blanched spinach, zucchini, and algae wafers. A balanced diet will help keep this fish healthy and vibrant, enhancing its stunning colors and energy levels.

Tankmates: Melanochromis auratus is known for its territorial and aggressive nature, especially towards other cichlids. It is best kept in a species-only tank or with other robust, similarly-sized African cichlids that can tolerate its aggressive behavior. Fish like Pseudotropheus or Labidochromis are often good tankmates. Due to their territoriality, provide plenty of hiding spaces such as rocks, caves, and plants to help reduce stress and aggression.
