Diet: Melanochromis johanni is an omnivorous species that will thrive on a varied diet. In captivity, it should be fed high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. It also enjoys vegetable matter such as blanched spinach, zucchini, and algae wafers. Offering a balanced diet will help maintain their health, vibrant coloration, and energetic behavior.

Tankmates: Melanochromis johanni (Eastern variety) is known for its aggressive and territorial nature, especially during breeding. It should be kept with other robust, similarly-sized African cichlids that can handle its aggression, such as species from the Pseudotropheus or Labidochromis genera. To reduce aggression, provide plenty of hiding spots using rocks, caves, and plants to allow fish to establish their territories. Avoid keeping it with smaller or more peaceful species, as it may bully or harm them. A large aquarium with lots of space is important to reduce territorial disputes.
