Diet: Melanotaenia lacustris is an omnivorous species, thriving on a varied diet that includes high-quality flake foods, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They will also benefit from plant-based foods, such as blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini) and algae wafers. Offering a mix of protein-rich and plant-based foods will keep them healthy and vibrant.

Tankmates: This rainbowfish is peaceful and community-oriented, making it an excellent choice for a variety of peaceful tank setups. It does well with other species of rainbowfish, as well as tetras, barbs, Corydoras, and other small, non-aggressive fish. While they are sociable and should ideally be kept in schools of at least 6 individuals, they also do well with other mid-to-top-dwelling fish. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species. Providing a tank with plenty of open swimming space and hiding spots will help ensure the fish feel comfortable and reduce stress.

Males typically display a brilliant blend of iridescent blues, greens, and orange hues, while females are slightly more subdued in coloration.
