Optimal living conditions: 24 - 30 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
150 l+ sized aquarium

Diet: Melanotaenia splendida australis is an omnivorous species that thrives on a varied diet. In captivity, it should be fed high-quality flake foods, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They also benefit from plant-based foods like algae wafers, blanched spinach, and zucchini. Offering a mix of plant and protein-rich foods will help maintain their health and vibrant colors.
Tankmates: This peaceful and active species does well in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. It is compatible with other species of rainbowfish, as well as tetras, barbs, catfish like Corydoras, and other mid-to-top-dwelling fish. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals to promote their natural behavior and help them feel secure. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive or large species that may stress them out. They enjoy a tank with plenty of open swimming space and some plants or hiding spots.
Note: Melanotaenia splendida australis, or Australian Rainbowfish, is a vibrant and colorful species known for its iridescent blue and gold hues, especially in males. Females are more subdued in color but still attractive. This species is hardy, easy to care for, and well-suited for beginner and experienced aquarists alike. With proper care, they can live for several years, providing a burst of color and activity in your aquarium. They enjoy swimming in the mid-to-upper levels of the tank and will benefit from a well-planted setup with plenty of open swimming areas.
