Pangio kuhlii
Common name: Kuhli Loach, Coolie Loach
Origin: Southeast Asia (native to freshwater rivers and streams in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.0 - 7.5 pH
40 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 10 - 12 cm
Diet: Pangio kuhlii is primarily carnivorous and feeds on small invertebrates, worms, and detritus in the wild. In captivity, they will happily consume a variety of foods such as high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also enjoy scavenging for leftover food, making them great cleanup crew members for the bottom of the tank.
Tankmates: Kuhli Loaches are peaceful and social, thriving in groups of 4-6 or more. They are bottom dwellers and are generally harmless to other tank inhabitants. They get along well with other peaceful species like small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive fish, as they may be intimidated or bullied. Kuhli Loaches love having plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, rocks, and plants, where they can retreat to when they feel threatened or need rest.
Note: Pangio kuhlii, or the Kuhli Loach, is a fascinating and unique species, known for its eel-like appearance and worm-like movements. These loaches are excellent for aquariums with a fine substrate, as they like to burrow into the sand and search for food. They are nocturnal and tend to be most active at night, so a peaceful tank environment with low-light conditions will suit them best. Despite their small size, Kuhli Loaches are quite active and curious, often exploring all the nooks and crannies of the tank. They are sensitive to water quality, so regular maintenance and clean, well-oxygenated water are essential to their health.
