Pangio myersi
Common name: Myer’s Loach, Myers’ Coolie Loach
Origin: Southeast Asia (native to Borneo, Malaysia, and Indonesia)
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 40 liters+
Adult fish size: 8 - 10 cm
Diet: Pangio myersi is carnivorous and primarily feeds on small invertebrates and detritus in the wild. In the aquarium, they will eat sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They are opportunistic feeders and will scavenge for leftover food at the bottom of the tank. While they will nibble on plant matter, protein-based foods should form the bulk of their diet.
Tankmates: Pangio myersi is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish that is well-suited for community aquariums. It is a social species and should be kept in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. These loaches get along well with other peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, and small cichlids. They can also coexist with other bottom-dwelling species such as Corydoras and other loaches. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or large fish that may bully or outcompete them for food. Since they are nocturnal, they enjoy having plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, plants, and driftwood, to retreat to during the day.
Note: Pangio myersi is a fascinating, eel-like fish that is often active during the night. Like other loaches in the Pangio genus, they are burrowers and will sift through fine sand or substrate looking for food. A tank with soft, fine substrate is ideal to allow them to exhibit their natural behavior. They are relatively small, but active and curious, making them an interesting addition to peaceful aquariums. Regular water changes and a well-maintained tank with good filtration are essential to keep them healthy.
