Pangio pangia
Common name: Pangio Loach, River Loach
Origin: Southeast Asia (native to parts of Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia)
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 40 liters+
Adult fish size: 8 - 10 cm
Diet: Pangio pangia is primarily carnivorous and feeds on small invertebrates, worms, and detritus in the wild. In captivity, they will consume sinking pellets, live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They are scavengers and will enjoy searching the bottom of the tank for leftover food. While they may nibble on plant matter occasionally, a protein-rich diet should be the primary focus.
Tankmates: Pangio pangia is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling species that can be kept in community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish. They thrive in groups of at least 4-6 individuals, and keeping them in a group allows them to display their social behaviors. Good tankmates include small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. Avoid keeping them with larger or aggressive fish that may intimidate or outcompete them for food. They appreciate a tank with plenty of hiding spaces, such as caves, plants, and driftwood.
Note: Pangio pangia is known for its eel-like, slender body and active, inquisitive behavior. These loaches are mostly nocturnal, and they spend much of the day hiding in caves or under plants. When active, they may be seen burrowing into the substrate or searching the tank for food. They are best suited to tanks with soft, fine substrate where they can dig and sift through the sand. Pangio pangia is relatively hardy, but like other loaches, they benefit from stable water conditions and good water filtration.
