Diet: Pelvicachromis pulcher is an omnivorous cichlid, which will happily accept a variety of foods. In the wild, they feed on small invertebrates, worms, and plant matter. In captivity, they will readily eat high-quality flake or pellet foods, as well as frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. A varied diet, with both protein and plant matter, will keep them healthy and vibrant. Kribensis may also graze on algae and plant matter in the aquarium.
Tankmates: Kribensis cichlids are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They do well in community tanks with other peaceful species that do not invade their territory. Suitable tankmates include small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and other peaceful bottom dwellers. It’s best to keep them with other non-aggressive fish that inhabit different parts of the tank. They should be kept in pairs or small groups, as they tend to be territorial, especially when breeding. Provide plenty of hiding places, plants, and caves where they can retreat to when they feel threatened or to establish a breeding site.
Note: Pelvicachromis pulcher is known for its vibrant coloration, with the males displaying shades of purple, red, and yellow, especially when in breeding condition. The females are typically a more subdued color but are also quite attractive, with a reddish belly. These cichlids are hardy and relatively easy to care for, making them a great choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. They also exhibit fascinating behaviors, such as digging and defending their chosen territories. They are excellent parents and can be observed taking care of their fry after spawning.
