Diet: Placidochromis phenochilus "Tanzania" is a carnivorous cichlid, feeding on smaller fish, invertebrates, and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, they do best on high-quality, protein-rich foods such as pellets or granules made for carnivorous cichlids. Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and krill. While they can graze on algae or biofilm, a primarily meaty diet will ensure they thrive and maintain their health.

Tankmates: The Tanzania White Lips Cichlid can be somewhat aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding. It is best kept with other semi-aggressive cichlids from Lake Tanganyika, such as Cyprichromis, Altolamprologus, or other placidochromis species. It should be avoided with smaller, peaceful species, as it may bully or eat them. Providing plenty of rockwork, caves, and hiding spaces is crucial for reducing aggression and helping fish establish territories. A well-planted tank with open swimming areas is ideal for this species.
