Diet: Polypterus senegalus is a carnivorous species and requires a protein-based diet. They thrive on live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms, small fish, and other meaty offerings. They can also accept high-quality pellets and freeze-dried foods but should primarily be fed live or frozen foods to ensure they get the nutrients they need. It's essential to offer a varied diet, as they are opportunistic feeders in the wild.

Tankmates: Polypterus senegalus is a peaceful species but can become territorial as it matures. They are best kept with other large, non-aggressive fish, such as large tetras, peaceful cichlids, and other bichirs. Avoid housing them with very small fish, as they may become prey. This species enjoys having plenty of hiding spots in the tank, such as caves, driftwood, and plants. While they are nocturnal and often more active at night, they should still have a well-decorated tank to explore and feel secure.

Known for its long, cylindrical body, armored scales, and multiple dorsal fins, it is often considered a living fossil. Like other bichirs, they are air-breathers and must have access to the surface to gulp air. It's important to provide a secure tank lid, as they can be escape artists. Senegal bichirs are hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for aquariums with the proper conditions, but they do require a large tank as they grow.
