Prionobrama filigera
Common name: Filigree Tetra, Featherfin Tetra
Origin: South America (found in the Rio Orinoco and Rio Negro basins in Venezuela and Brazil)
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 5.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 100 liters+ (a larger tank is ideal to accommodate their swimming space)
Adult fish size: 5 - 7 cm
Diet: Prionobrama filigera is an omnivorous species and enjoys a varied diet. In the aquarium, they can be fed high-quality flake foods, pellets, and a mix of live or frozen offerings like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also appreciate plant matter, so adding small amounts of vegetable matter such as spinach or algae wafers can be beneficial. A well-rounded diet will help keep them healthy and vibrant.
Tankmates: Prionobrama filigera is a peaceful, schooling fish that does well in a community aquarium with other non-aggressive species. They are best kept in groups of 6 or more to bring out their natural schooling behavior and to reduce stress. Good tankmates include tetras, rasboras, small catfish, and peaceful livebearers. Due to their relatively small size, avoid keeping them with overly large or aggressive fish. Providing plants and driftwood for hiding places will make them feel secure.
Note: Prionobrama filigera is known for its beautiful, elongated fins that give it the "filigree" appearance. These tetras are relatively hardy, but they do require stable water conditions and a well-maintained tank. Their natural habitat is slightly acidic to neutral water, so it's important to replicate those conditions for their health and longevity. While they can tolerate a range of water parameters, they do best in slightly softer, acidic water. This fish is active and peaceful, making it a fantastic addition to a peaceful community tank.
