Origin: Southeast Asia (found in the rivers of Borneo, Indonesia, and Malaysia)

Diet: Protomyzon pachychilus is a primarily herbivorous species, feeding on algae and plant matter in the wild. In the aquarium, they can be offered algae wafers, blanched vegetables like spinach, zucchini, and cucumber, and occasionally some soft plant-based foods. They may also accept some meaty foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp, but their diet should mainly consist of plant material to keep them healthy. Regular water changes and a stable environment are also important to avoid excess algae growth.

Tankmates: Protomyzon pachychilus is a peaceful species that does well in a community tank with other non-aggressive fish. They can be kept with other peaceful species like tetras, small cichlids, rasboras, and other non-aggressive bottom-dwellers. Due to their feeding habits, it’s important to provide sufficient plant matter or algae in the tank to support their diet. They do not do well with overly aggressive or large fish that might intimidate them. A tank with plenty of rocks, driftwood, and plants will allow them to feel secure and comfortable.
