Pseudotropheus callainos
Common name: Cobalt Blue Zebra Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa. Found in rocky shorelines with abundant crevices and caves.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 7.5 - 8.5
- Aquarium size: 150 liters+ (requires a rocky setup with plenty of hiding spaces)
Adult fish size: 10 - 12 cm
Diet: Herbivore. Feed a diet rich in plant matter, such as spirulina-based flakes, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini. Avoid protein-heavy diets to prevent health issues.
Tankmates: Best kept with other African cichlids from Lake Malawi, such as other Mbuna species. Avoid housing with timid or slow-moving fish, as Pseudotropheus callainos can be territorial, especially during breeding. Overcrowding the tank (with proper filtration) can help diffuse aggression.
Note: Pseudotropheus callainos is a striking fish with its intense cobalt blue coloration, making it a popular choice for Mbuna enthusiasts. This species requires a well-maintained tank with rocky formations to replicate its natural habitat and provide territories. They are relatively hardy but require stable water conditions and high oxygen levels. Aggression is typical of Mbuna, so careful consideration of tankmates and aquascaping is essential. Regular water changes and good filtration are crucial to keep them healthy.
