Pterophyllum altum
Common name: Altum Angelfish
Origin: South America, primarily the Orinoco and Rio Atabapo river basins.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 26 - 30 °C
- pH: 4.5 - 6.5 (soft, acidic water)
- Aquarium size: 300 liters+ (tall tanks are preferred due to their height)
Adult fish size: 15 - 20 cm in body length; up to 30 cm in height, including fins.
Diet: Omnivore. Feed a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and live foods. Occasionally offer blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini.
Tankmates: Peaceful and best kept with other calm, non-aggressive fish. Suitable tankmates include small tetras, peaceful catfish like Corydoras, and other species from soft, acidic water environments. Avoid fin-nipping species.
Note: The Altum Angelfish is known for its elegant, elongated fins and striking striped patterns. It is more delicate and requires more specific water conditions than its close relative, the common angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare). A biotope setup with driftwood, leaf litter, and subdued lighting is ideal for mimicking their natural habitat. Due to their large size and sensitive nature, they are recommended for experienced aquarists.
Note: This small chart is only the basics and is not enough for you to decide if this fish is right for you! Do your own detailed research before buying!!
