Sawbwa spindens
Common name: Sawbwa Barb
Origin: Native to Southeast Asia, specifically found in slow-moving streams and rivers in Myanmar (Burma) and parts of Thailand.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 22 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 60 liters+ (for a small group of fish)
Adult fish size: 4 - 5 cm
Diet: Omnivore. Sawbwa resplendens are not particularly picky eaters. They will accept high-quality flake food, sinking pellets, and frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. They also enjoy occasional live foods and algae-based food. A varied diet will help bring out their natural colors and ensure they remain healthy.
Tankmates: Peaceful and best kept in schools of 6 or more individuals. They are very peaceful and make an excellent choice for community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish. Tetras, rasboras, and other small species work well. Avoid keeping them with aggressive fish or larger species that may intimidate them.
Note: The Resplendent Sawbwa is a beautiful and peaceful species that is a great addition to a community tank. Known for its striking coloration, which can include shades of red, orange, and blue, it is a favorite among aquarists who appreciate small, colorful fish. Despite their small size, they are active swimmers and will often be seen darting about the aquarium in a tight-knit school. It’s important to provide them with a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and gentle water flow. As a shoaling species, they thrive best when kept in groups of at least 6, as this makes them feel secure and reduces stress.
