Sewellia lineolata
Common name: Zebra Hillstream Loach
Origin: Native to fast-flowing streams and rivers in Vietnam and Laos, typically found in the rocky areas of the Mekong River basin.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 22 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 80 liters+ (suitable for a small group of fish)
Adult fish size: 4 - 5 cm
Diet: Omnivore. Sewellia lineolata primarily feeds on biofilm, algae, and detritus in the wild. In captivity, they can be fed high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and a variety of blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini. They also enjoy small live foods like brine shrimp or daphnia. A diet rich in algae and plant matter will keep them healthy and vibrant.
Tankmates: Peaceful. Zebra Hillstream Loaches do well with other peaceful species that can tolerate similar water conditions. They make great companions for other small loaches, tetras, rasboras, and shrimp. These loaches prefer a tank with moderate to strong water flow and plenty of rockwork, which mimics their natural habitat. Aggressive species or large fish may stress them out, so it’s best to avoid keeping them with such tankmates.
Note: The Zebra Hillstream Loach is known for its striking zebra-like markings, which provide a unique visual appeal. These loaches are highly active and are constantly foraging for food along the tank's surfaces, using their specialized pectoral fins to cling to rocks in fast-flowing water. They prefer well-oxygenated, clean water with a strong current, so a good filtration system and water movement are essential. Providing them with plenty of hiding spaces, such as caves or rock piles, will help them feel secure and thrive. These fish are not only fascinating to observe but also help keep aquariums clean by grazing on algae.
