Sturisoma aureum
Common name: Golden Sturisoma
Origin: Found in the slow-moving rivers and streams of South America, primarily in Peru and Brazil.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 100 liters+ (for a group)
Adult fish size: 12 - 15 cm
Diet: Herbivorous. Sturisoma aureum feeds primarily on algae, biofilm, and plant matter in the wild. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet of high-quality algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, and peas. They also benefit from occasional live or frozen foods like daphnia, bloodworms, or brine shrimp to add variety to their diet.
Tankmates: Peaceful. These fish are peaceful and do well in a community tank with other non-aggressive species. Ideal tankmates include other peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, small catfish, and shrimp. Sturisoma aureum is generally calm but should not be kept with aggressive species that may bully them or compete for food. They enjoy having plenty of hiding spots in the aquarium, such as caves or driftwood, where they can rest.
Note: The Golden Sturisoma is a stunning catfish known for its beautiful golden-yellow color and elongated body. This species has unique bristle-like protrusions on the head and body, which give it a distinct appearance. They are active algae grazers, making them an excellent addition to planted aquariums, where they help control algae growth. As they prefer slightly faster water flow, a good filtration system and water movement should be provided to replicate their natural environment. These fish enjoy having driftwood and plants to explore, as they often cling to surfaces with their specialized fins. Sturisoma aureum is a social species, so keeping them in small groups is recommended.
