Synodontis petricola
Common name: Petricola Synodontis
Origin: Native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 7.5 - 9.0
- Aquarium size: 150 liters+ (recommended for optimal comfort)
Adult fish size: 10 - 12 cm
Diet: Omnivorous. Synodontis petricola is a bottom-dwelling catfish and scavenger. They are not particularly picky eaters and will accept a wide variety of foods. Offer a mix of sinking pellets, frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, as well as occasional vegetable matter. They also enjoy grazing on algae that grows on rocks or aquarium surfaces.
Tankmates: These catfish are generally peaceful and make excellent tankmates for other peaceful species, especially those from Lake Tanganyika. Good companions include cichlids (such as the smaller species of Mbuna or Tanganyikan cichlids), tetras, barbs, and other bottom-dwellers. While they do well in a community tank, avoid housing them with overly aggressive species. As bottom-dwellers, they may compete for space with other bottom-feeding species, so ensure the tank is adequately large with plenty of hiding spots.
Note: Synodontis petricola is a stunning fish with a peaceful nature. Its body is typically olive to gray in color, adorned with dark spots, and it features the characteristic whisker-like barbels of catfish. They are active scavengers and prefer to spend most of their time on the tank bottom, sifting through the substrate. Providing plenty of hiding spots like caves, rocks, and driftwood will help them feel secure, as they can be shy during the day. They are a great addition to aquariums with African cichlids, especially those that share their native habitat in Lake Tanganyika. While they are hardy and adaptable, maintaining stable water conditions is important for their health and longevity.
