Synodontis angelicus
Common name: Angelicus Catfish
Origin: Native to West and Central Africa, specifically found in rivers like the Congo River and its tributaries.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 200 liters+ (larger aquariums are better due to their size and active nature)
Adult fish size: 15 - 20 cm
Diet: Omnivorous. Synodontis angelicus will accept a wide variety of foods. Provide a mix of high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also enjoy occasional vegetable matter, such as blanched zucchini or spinach. They are opportunistic feeders and will scavenge food particles from the substrate, so it’s essential to ensure they are offered a well-balanced diet.
Tankmates: Peaceful but may be territorial with other bottom dwellers. They are generally calm but can sometimes show aggression to smaller or similarly sized fish, especially during feeding time. Compatible tankmates include other peaceful species like tetras, barbs, and cichlids. It’s best to avoid overly aggressive or very small fish, as Synodontis angelicus can become territorial. They prefer being kept in groups but can also be housed individually.
Note: Synodontis angelicus is a stunning, active catfish with unique "angelic" pectoral fins that give it an almost graceful appearance, earning it its common name. This species is known for its nocturnal behavior and will be more active at night, so provide plenty of hiding spots in the aquarium, such as caves or driftwood, where they can retreat during the day. They are bottom-dwellers and will often sift through the substrate in search of food. This catfish is hardy, but due to its size and active nature, it’s best suited for larger aquariums with well-established tank conditions.
