Synodontis flavitaeniatus
Common name: Yellow Banded Catfish
Origin: Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 200 liters+ (larger aquariums are recommended for this species due to its size and active nature)
Adult fish size: 20 - 25 cm
Diet: Omnivorous. Synodontis flavitaeniatus will accept a wide range of foods. Provide a mix of high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They will also appreciate occasional plant matter like blanched zucchini or spinach. As bottom-dwellers, they are scavengers and will sift through the substrate for food, so it’s important to provide them with a balanced diet.
Tankmates: Generally peaceful, but they can become territorial, especially when housed in smaller tanks. It’s best to keep them with other peaceful, non-aggressive species, such as tetras, barbs, and non-territorial cichlids. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive fish or other bottom-dwelling species that may compete for food or space. They do well in groups but can also be kept individually.
Note: Synodontis flavitaeniatus is a visually striking catfish, characterized by its unique yellow and black striped pattern that gives it the "yellow-banded" appearance. These catfish have long, graceful pectoral fins and a sturdy body, making them an attractive addition to larger aquariums. As with many Synodontis species, they are primarily nocturnal and are most active at night. Providing them with caves, driftwood, and other hiding spots is essential for their well-being, as they will seek refuge during the day. They are hardy and adaptable, but a well-maintained aquarium with stable water parameters will ensure they thrive.
