Geophagus surinamensis
Common name: Surinam Eartheater
Origin: South America (widely distributed across the Amazon River basin, including Suriname, Guyana, and parts of Venezuela and Brazil)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.0 - 7.5 pH
300 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 20 - 25 cm
Diet: Geophagus surinamensis are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet including high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They naturally sift through the substrate to find food, so ensure a sandy bottom where they can exhibit this behavior. Supplement their diet with vegetable matter like spinach or algae wafers.
Tankmates: Peaceful to semi-aggressive species such as larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, and catfish like Plecos or Corydoras. They thrive in groups of 4-6 but require ample space due to their size and territorial behavior during breeding. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive or very small species that may be intimidated or eaten.
