Gyrinocheilus aymonieri
Common name: Chinese Algae Eater
Origin: Southeast Asia (native to Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, found in fast-flowing rivers and streams)
Optimal living conditions: 22 - 28 °C temperature
6.0 - 8.0 pH
200 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 15 - 28 cm
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, they feed on algae and biofilm in the aquarium. Supplement their diet with algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber, and occasional protein sources like sinking pellets or frozen bloodworms.
Tankmates: Semi-aggressive as they mature, so they are best kept with robust tankmates like barbs, larger tetras, or cichlids. Avoid housing them with slow-moving or long-finned fish as they may exhibit territorial or fin-nipping behavior.
Note: Chinese Algae Eaters can become territorial and less effective at cleaning algae as they grow older. Ensure plenty of hiding spaces and avoid keeping multiple males in the same tank to reduce aggression.
