Hemichromis guttatus
Common name: Spotted Jewel Cichlid
Origin: West Africa (native to rivers and lakes in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
150 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 12 - 15 cm
Diet: Hemichromis guttatus are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They will also graze on plant matter, so supplement their diet with spirulina or blanched vegetables like zucchini and spinach.
Tankmates: Semi-aggressive species such as larger tetras, barbs, and other cichlids. Hemichromis guttatus can become territorial, particularly during breeding, so provide plenty of hiding places and rock structures in the tank. Avoid keeping them with very small or peaceful fish, as they may be bullied or harassed.
Note: Spotted Jewel Cichlids are known for their bright coloration and active nature. While they can be kept in community tanks, they do best in a species-only setup or with larger, more robust tankmates to prevent aggression.
