Hesemania nana
Common name: Dwarf Cichlid, Rainbow Cichlid
Origin: Central America (native to rivers in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Honduras)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
100 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 6 - 8 cm
Diet: Hesemania nana are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, small pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They will also enjoy plant-based foods like spirulina and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, peas, and spinach.
Tankmates: These cichlids are peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They do best with other peaceful fish like small tetras, rasboras, catfish, and similarly-sized cichlids. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive fish or very small species that could be bullied or preyed upon.
Note: Hesemania nana is a small and colorful cichlid, making them an excellent choice for a peaceful community tank. Their beautiful colors and calm demeanor are especially noticeable when they are kept in pairs or small groups. A well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots will help reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.
