Iodotropheus sprengerae
Common name: Red Fin Cichlid
Origin: East Africa (native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
7.5 - 9.0 pH
200 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 7 - 8 cm
Diet: Iodotropheus sprengerae are primarily herbivores, and their diet should consist mostly of plant-based foods. They will accept high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes designed for herbivores, as well as blanched vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, and peas. They can also be given algae wafers and occasional protein sources like daphnia or bloodworms, but their diet should remain predominantly plant-based to maintain their health.
Tankmates: These cichlids are peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They do best in a species-specific tank or with other peaceful Lake Tanganyika species, such as other small cichlids (e.g., Cyprichromis or Neolamprologus species). Avoid keeping them with aggressive or larger fish that may bully or outcompete them for food. It’s best to house them in groups of 6 or more to reduce territorial aggression.
Note: Iodotropheus sprengerae is known for its vibrant coloration, with males displaying bright red fins and a striking, streamlined body. This species thrives in well-maintained, hard water with plenty of rocks and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat. They enjoy swimming in open areas but appreciate having plenty of shelter to retreat to.
