Julidochromis regani
Common name: Regan’s Julie
Origin: East Africa (native to Lake Tanganyika, particularly in the rocky shorelines of the lake, including areas like the northern parts and around the Zaire River)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
7.5 - 9.0 pH
150 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 8 - 10 cm
Diet: Julidochromis regani are carnivores and primarily feed on small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they should be fed high-quality cichlid pellets, as well as live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They can also be given occasional plant-based foods like spirulina and algae, but their diet should be mainly protein-rich to mimic their natural feeding habits.
Tankmates: These cichlids are territorial, particularly during breeding, and should be housed with similarly peaceful, medium-sized species from Lake Tanganyika, such as other Julidochromis species, Neolamprologus, or Cyprichromis. They can be kept in a species-specific tank or with other peaceful fish that can tolerate their territorial behavior. It’s important to provide plenty of hiding places and rocky structures in the tank, as they are rock-dwellers by nature.
Note: Julidochromis regani is known for its slender, elongated body with a striking silver or yellowish color and dark vertical stripes. This species is highly territorial, especially around breeding sites, and is best kept in an aquarium with ample rocks, caves, and hiding spots. Their beauty and interesting behavior make them popular among cichlid enthusiasts, but their territorial nature requires careful attention to tank setup and stocking.
