L144 Ancistrus spec.
Common name: Lemon Bristlenose Pleco
Origin: South America (native to the Rio Xingu and other tributaries in Brazil)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
100 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 8 - 10 cm
Diet: L144 Ancistrus spec. are omnivores, primarily feeding on algae, detritus, and plant matter in their natural habitat. In the aquarium, they should be provided with a varied diet of algae wafers, high-quality sinking pellets, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp. They also enjoy blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, and cucumbers. A diet rich in plant matter helps keep their digestive system healthy and supports their natural algae-cleaning behavior.
Tankmates: These peaceful plecos are great additions to a community tank. They get along well with other peaceful species, including tetras, rasboras, and catfish. However, avoid keeping them with larger or aggressive fish that may harass them. While they are generally peaceful, they can be territorial when it comes to prime hiding spots. Be sure to provide plenty of caves, rocks, and driftwood for them to explore and hide in.
Note: L144 Ancistrus spec. is a popular and attractive variant of the Bristlenose Pleco, known for its bright yellow or golden body with darker markings. The males develop distinctive bristles on their snouts, which are used in mating rituals and territorial disputes. Like other plecos, they are excellent at helping to keep aquariums clean by grazing on algae. However, they should not be relied on solely for algae control and should still be fed a proper diet.
