Origin: South America (native to the Rio Xingu and other river systems in Brazil)
Optimal living conditions: 26 - 30 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
100 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 12 - 15 cm
Diet: The L181 Ancistrus sp., also known as the Gold Spot Ancistrus, is an omnivore and will thrive on a variety of foods. They primarily feed on algae and detritus in the wild but should be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, high-quality pleco pellets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. They also enjoy live or frozen foods, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Though they graze on algae, they should not be relied on for complete algae control and require a well-balanced diet for optimal health.
Tankmates: L181 Ancistrus sp. are peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish that get along well with other peaceful species. They can be kept with tetras, rasboras, and smaller, non-aggressive fish. They are also compatible with other bottom dwellers like Corydoras and smaller plecos. It is essential to avoid aggressive or larger fish that might harass them or compete for food. Providing plenty of hiding places, such as caves, driftwood, and rocks, is important to help them feel secure, as they are nocturnal and tend to be more active at night.
Note: The L181 Ancistrus sp. is known for its striking appearance, featuring a dark body adorned with bright yellow or gold spots, making it a stunning addition to aquariums. These plecos are excellent algae grazers and help keep the tank clean but will need supplemental feeding to stay healthy. Like other Ancistrus species, they have a distinctive set of whiskers (known as barbels) that they use to search for food. This species thrives in a well-maintained, stable environment with plenty of hiding spots and good water quality.
