Loricaria simillina
Common name: Striped Twig Catfish / Twig Pleco
Origin: South America (native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins, specifically Brazil and Venezuela)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
100 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 12 - 15 cm
Diet: Loricaria simillima is primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and plant matter, but it is also opportunistic and will consume detritus and small invertebrates. In captivity, it will thrive on high-quality algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. It will also eat biofilm and algae that grow on aquarium surfaces and decorations. Occasionally, supplementing its diet with live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp can help enhance its health and coloration.
Tankmates: Loricaria simillima is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling species that does well in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. It can be kept with other peaceful catfish, such as Corydoras, and small to medium-sized peaceful community fish. It is best to avoid keeping it with aggressive or larger species that might outcompete it for food. As a bottom-dweller, it appreciates a tank with plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and plants, where it can rest during the day. These catfish also do well in aquariums with soft, slightly acidic water.
Note: Loricaria simillima, commonly known as the Striped Twig Catfish, is a unique and visually striking species, easily identified by its long, slender body and intricate markings that resemble twigs. These catfish are known for their peaceful nature and their ability to blend into their environment by using their body shape to mimic twigs or branches. They require a well-maintained tank with plenty of natural decorations, such as driftwood and rocks, where they can hide during the day. While they are hardy, they thrive in stable water conditions and need a balanced diet of algae, plant matter, and occasional protein to remain healthy.
