Microgeophagus altospinosus
Common name: Bolt Cichlid, or Dwarf Acara
Origin: South America (native to the Amazon River basin in Brazil and Peru)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
100 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 8 - 10 cm
Diet: Microgeophagus altospinosus is omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods in the wild. In captivity, they should be given a balanced diet of high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also enjoy plant matter, so supplementing their diet with blanched vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, or peas can be beneficial. Offering variety will help maintain their health and vibrant colors.
Tankmates: Bolt Cichlids are peaceful for their size and are often kept in community tanks. They do well with other peaceful species such as tetras, small catfish, and other non-aggressive cichlids. Larger or overly aggressive fish should be avoided, as they can intimidate or outcompete these small cichlids. They are best kept in pairs or small groups, and they enjoy aquariums with plenty of hiding spots, plants, and gentle water movement. Since they are territorial during breeding, some space and decorations are important to help reduce conflicts.
Note: Microgeophagus altospinosus, also known as the Bolt Cichlid or Dwarf Acara, is a small but striking cichlid, with vibrant coloration that can range from bright orange to yellow, complemented by iridescent blue markings. This species is well-loved for its peaceful nature, making it suitable for community aquariums. Their small size, attractive appearance, and relatively easy care requirements make them a great option for beginner to intermediate aquarists. However, they do require a well-maintained tank with stable water conditions to thrive.
