Each root is slightly different and has a unique structure and shape - it is usually dark on one side and light on the other.
The roots do not release any harmful substances and are completely safe for fish and reptiles. To avoid possible initial dyeing the water, boil the root for one hour or soak it for a longer time. When soaked, it has a darker colour than in the picture. They sink immediately after soaking, or after a while.
