Origin: South America (native to the Rio Orinoco basin in Venezuela and parts of Colombia)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
5.5 - 7.5 pH
60 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 4 - 5 cm
Diet: Nannostomus beckfordi is omnivorous and thrives on a varied diet. They can be fed high-quality flake foods, small pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They also enjoy small amounts of plant-based foods, including algae wafers and finely chopped vegetables. A well-rounded diet helps maintain their slender, attractive bodies and vibrant coloration.
Tankmates: Beckford's Pencilfish is a peaceful and shy species, making them ideal for community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. They do well with other small fish like tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, and small catfish such as Corydoras. Since they are social, it's best to keep them in groups of at least 6 to 8 individuals to help them feel secure and exhibit their natural schooling behavior. They prefer a well-planted tank with soft water and gentle filtration, offering plenty of hiding spots.
Note: Nannostomus beckfordi, or Beckford's Pencilfish, is a stunning species with a distinctive, slender body shape and beautiful coloration. The fish has an elegant appearance, with a golden yellow or orange stripe running down its body, complemented by red markings on its fins. These peaceful fish are not only attractive but also active swimmers, especially in schools, and they add a lively yet peaceful element to planted aquariums. They prefer a calm environment with plenty of plants and soft, slightly acidic water conditions to thrive.
