Product description

Common name: Multi, Multibanded Cichlid

Origin: Africa (native to Lake Tanganyika, primarily found in the rocky shorelines)

Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
7.5 - 9.0 pH
100 l+ sized aquarium (preferably with a sandy substrate and rocky structures)

Adult fish size: 4 - 6 cm

Diet: Neolamprologus multifasciatus is an omnivore, and their diet should consist of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They also benefit from plant-based foods like spirulina or algae wafers. A varied diet ensures they stay healthy and display their vibrant colors.

Tankmates: The Multibanded Cichlid is a peaceful yet territorial species, especially when breeding. While they are relatively small, they will defend their territory aggressively. They are best kept in species-only tanks or with other peaceful Tanganyikan cichlids, such as Julidochromis or Lamprologus species. A well-planted tank with plenty of rocky structures and caves is essential for providing the hiding spots they need. They should be kept in groups, as they naturally form colonies in the wild, but each fish will still claim its own territory within the group.

Note: Neolamprologus multifasciatus, also known as the Multibanded Cichlid or "Multi," is one of the smallest cichlids from Lake Tanganyika. Despite their small size, they exhibit fascinating social and territorial behavior, especially when breeding. In nature, they are often found in colonies, where multiple fish will share a rock crevice. These fish are often kept in aquariums with sandy substrates and rocky or shell-based environments to mimic their natural habitat. Due to their peaceful demeanor outside of breeding periods, they are well-suited for community setups, provided other tankmates are not overly aggressive. Their striking striped body, with several dark vertical bands, makes them a standout species in aquariums.
