Otocinclus cocama
Common name: Cocama Otocinclus, Cocama Dwarf Suckerfish
Origin: South America (native to rivers and streams in the Amazon Basin, particularly around Peru and Brazil)
Optimal living conditions: 22 - 28 °C temperature
6.0 - 7.5 pH
40 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 3 - 4 cm
Diet: Otocinclus cocama is an herbivorous species, primarily feeding on algae, biofilm, and plant matter. They are excellent algae eaters, especially on soft green algae, diatoms, and biofilm that grow on surfaces in the aquarium. Supplementing their diet with algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, and occasional high-quality plant-based foods will ensure they stay healthy.
Tankmates: Cocama Otos are peaceful, social fish and should be kept in groups of 5-6 or more. They are excellent tankmates for other peaceful species, including small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras catfish, and other gentle fish. These Otos are ideal for community tanks with a planted setup, as they love to graze on algae and biofilm in the plants and on decorations. Avoid aggressive fish or large predators that may harass or consume them.
Note: Otocinclus cocama, also known as the Cocama Otocinclus or Cocama Dwarf Suckerfish, is a small and peaceful algae-eating fish that is popular among aquarium hobbyists. They are effective at cleaning algae in tanks and are particularly useful in tanks with delicate plants, as they help reduce algae overgrowth without damaging the foliage. This species has a slender, transparent body with a subtle dark stripe along its back, making them visually striking in well-planted tanks. Like other Otocinclus species, they are sensitive to poor water conditions and require stable, clean water with good filtration. They should also be kept in established tanks with an ample supply of algae or supplemented feeding.
