Product description

Common name: Otocinclus, Dwarf Suckerfish

Origin: South America (native to slow-moving rivers and streams in Brazil, Peru, and other parts of the Amazon Basin)

Optimal living conditions: 22 - 28 °C temperature
6.0 - 7.5 pH
40 l+ sized aquarium

Adult fish size: 3 - 4 cm

Diet: Otocinclus affinis is an herbivorous species that primarily feeds on algae and plant matter. They are excellent algae eaters and should be fed algae wafers, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini or spinach), and occasionally biofilm-rich foods. While they can help with algae control in a tank, supplemental feeding is necessary to ensure they get enough nutrition, especially in newer tanks with less algae growth.

Tankmates: Otocinclus are peaceful and social fish, making them ideal for community tanks. They thrive in groups of at least 5-6 individuals, as they are shoaling fish. They are best kept with other peaceful species, such as tetras, rasboras, and small Corydoras catfish. Avoid aggressive species or large predatory fish that might see them as food. Otos also do well in planted tanks, where they can graze on algae and find shelter among the plants.

Note: Otocinclus affinis, commonly known as the Otocinclus or Dwarf Suckerfish, is a small and peaceful algae-eating fish that is highly sought after in freshwater aquariums for its ability to help keep tanks clean. These tiny fish are incredibly effective at eating algae, particularly types that other species may not consume, like soft green algae and biofilm. They have a small, slender body and are known for their unique sucker-shaped mouths, which allow them to cling to surfaces while grazing. Since they are sensitive to water conditions, it’s important to maintain stable water parameters and avoid drastic changes in temperature or water quality. Otos do best in well-established tanks with plenty of algae and plant life to support their natural feeding habits.
