Panaque sp. L191
Common name: L191 Tiger Panaque, Tiger Panaque Pleco
Origin: South America (native to the Amazon River basin in Brazil)
Optimal living conditions: 24 - 28 °C temperature
6.5 - 7.5 pH
200 l+ sized aquarium
Adult fish size: 20 - 25 cm
Diet: Panaque sp. L191 is primarily herbivorous, and while it is an algae eater, it also enjoys a varied diet rich in wood and plant material. In addition to algae wafers and blanched vegetables (such as zucchini, cucumber, and spinach), they require driftwood or other wood sources to graze on. This is essential for their digestion and overall health, as they have a specialized gut for breaking down wood fibers. Occasionally, they can be fed high-quality pellets and occasional protein-rich foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp.
Tankmates: L191 Panaque is generally peaceful, but due to its large size, it requires ample space and a well-planted tank to thrive. They do well in community tanks with other peaceful species, especially larger, non-aggressive fish such as larger cichlids, tetras, and catfish. Small, aggressive, or territorial fish should be avoided, as the Panaque is generally a bottom dweller and may be bullied in tight spaces. They also need plenty of hiding spots and surfaces like driftwood and rocks to feel secure.
Note: Panaque sp. L191, commonly known as the Tiger Panaque, is a stunning and unique species of pleco that is highly prized for its striking appearance. It has a dark body with distinctive light markings or "tiger stripes," which give it a bold, beautiful look. These plecos are known for their ability to consume wood and are often found in the wild where they feed on submerged driftwood. As a result, they require an aquarium with plenty of wood for grazing, which also serves as a natural source of fiber for them. While they are peaceful and nocturnal, they are active and require a spacious environment to accommodate their size and natural behaviors. Regular wood availability is key to keeping them healthy.
