Diet: Placidochromis phenochilus "Mdoka" is a carnivorous cichlid that feeds primarily on smaller fish, invertebrates, and zooplankton in the wild. In the aquarium, they thrive on high-quality pellets or granules designed for carnivorous cichlids, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and krill. Offering a varied diet is crucial to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. They are also known to graze on algae or biofilm if available.
Tankmates: The Mdoka White Lips Cichlid is an aggressive species and should be housed with similarly robust and semi-aggressive fish, such as other cichlids from Lake Malawi. Suitable tankmates include other Malawi cichlids, such as Aulonocara species, Cynotilapia, or Pseudotropheus species, as well as peaceful bottom-dwelling fish like Corydoras or Synodontis catfish. It’s essential to avoid keeping them with peaceful or small fish, as they may become prey or get bullied. Providing plenty of space, hiding places, and territorial boundaries within the tank is important to reduce aggression and stress.
Note: Placidochromis phenochilus "Mdoka" is a stunning cichlid known for its vibrant blue coloration and the distinctive white lips that give it its common name. The males typically display more intense coloration than females, especially during breeding displays. This species requires a large tank, as it can become territorial and needs space to establish its own area. They are relatively easy to care for but need a well-maintained environment with stable water parameters to thrive. Like many Malawi cichlids, they prefer harder, alkaline water conditions and benefit from a well-filtered tank with plenty of live rock or rockwork to mimic their natural environment.
