Diet: Polypterus delhezi is a carnivorous species that enjoys a varied diet consisting mainly of high-protein foods. In the aquarium, they can be fed a mix of frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms, small fish, and other meaty offerings. They may also accept pellets designed for carnivorous fish, but live or frozen foods should form the bulk of their diet. It's important to feed them in moderation to prevent overfeeding, as they can grow large quickly.

Tankmates: Polypterus delhezi is generally peaceful but can be somewhat territorial, especially when young. They can be kept with other large, peaceful fish like cichlids, large tetras, and other bichirs, but should not be housed with very small fish, as they may be seen as prey. Bichirs are slow-moving and enjoy having plenty of hiding spots in the aquarium, such as caves or submerged driftwood. They are nocturnal by nature, so they tend to be more active during the night.

Bichirs are considered living fossils due to their ancient lineage and distinctive, armored body with multiple dorsal fins. They are air-breathers and require access to the surface to gulp air, so it’s important to provide an aquarium with a tightly fitting lid to prevent escapes. While they are generally hardy, they do need a large tank with sufficient swimming space and hiding places. These fish can live for many years and grow fairly large, so make sure your tank setup can accommodate them long-term.
