Pseudogastromyzon laticeps
Common name: Sucker-Mouth Loach, Borneo Sucker Fish
Origin: Southeast Asia (found in fast-flowing rivers and streams in Borneo, Malaysia, and Indonesia)
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 100 liters+ (preferably with strong filtration and water movement)
Adult fish size: 8 - 10 cm
Diet: Pseudogastromyzon laticeps is primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae, detritus, and biofilm in its natural environment. In the aquarium, it will graze on algae and will benefit from supplementary foods like algae wafers, spirulina pellets, and blanched vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, and cucumber. Occasionally, they may accept some protein-rich foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp, but their diet should primarily consist of plant matter to maintain optimal health. Providing adequate algae or supplemental plant-based foods is essential for their well-being.
Tankmates: Pseudogastromyzon laticeps is a peaceful and somewhat shy species. It can be kept with other peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, and small catfish. Due to their preference for strong water movement, they are a great choice for tanks with good filtration and water currents. It's best to avoid keeping them with aggressive or larger species that could intimidate or outcompete them for food. They will also benefit from a tank with lots of hiding places, such as rocks, driftwood, and plants, which mimic their natural habitat.
Note: Pseudogastromyzon laticeps has a unique sucker-like mouth that it uses to cling to rocks and surfaces in fast-moving waters, where it feeds on algae and biofilm. This fish is ideal for an aquarium with strong filtration and water flow, as it mimics the conditions of its natural habitat. While hardy, they require stable water parameters and will thrive in a tank that has plenty of space for swimming, especially if there are areas with strong currents. They are also known to be nocturnal and will feel more comfortable if provided with plenty of hiding spots during the day.
