Pseudomugil signifer
Common name: Pacific Blue-Eye
Origin: Eastern Australia, New Guinea, and surrounding islands. Found in a variety of habitats including freshwater streams, brackish estuaries, and even coastal waters.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 22 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 8.0
- Aquarium size: 60 liters+ (prefers a tank with open swimming space and plenty of vegetation)
Adult fish size: 4 - 5 cm
Diet: Pseudomugil signifer is an omnivore that enjoys a mixed diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, as well as live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, and daphnia. Occasional supplementation with plant-based foods, such as spirulina, will benefit their health and enhance their coloration.
Tankmates: A peaceful schooling species that thrives in groups of 6 or more. They are compatible with small, peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras catfish. Avoid larger or aggressive tankmates, as Pseudomugil signifer can be shy. They also adapt well to slightly brackish tanks with appropriate tankmates.
Note: Pseudomugil signifer is known for its translucent body with subtle blue highlights and vibrant yellow fins. These active and inquisitive swimmers prefer tanks with dense planting combined with open areas for swimming. Adding floating plants or creating areas of gentle shade will help mimic their natural habitat. This species can tolerate a range of water conditions, including slightly brackish water, but stable parameters and regular maintenance are key to keeping them healthy. They are an excellent choice for peaceful community tanks or species-only setups.
