Pseudotropheus crabro
Common name: Bumblebee Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa. Found around rocky habitats and sunken logs where it often interacts with catfish nests.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 7.8 - 8.6
- Aquarium size: 200 liters+ (requires a tank with plenty of rocks and caves to mimic its natural environment)
Adult fish size: 12 - 15 cm
Diet: Omnivore. In the wild, Pseudotropheus crabro is known for cleaning parasites off catfish, but in captivity, it thrives on a diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, algae-based foods, and occasional frozen or live foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Avoid overfeeding protein-rich foods.
Tankmates: This species is aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding. Best housed with other robust Mbuna cichlids in a rocky setup. Avoid timid or slow-moving fish, as they may be bullied. Overcrowding (with sufficient filtration) can help minimize aggression.
Note: The Bumblebee Cichlid is well known for its striking yellow-and-black banded coloration, which can darken or lighten depending on mood or during spawning. It is a hardy and active species that requires stable water conditions and a carefully managed community to thrive. Regular water changes and a well-oxygenated tank are essential for their health. This species is fascinating for experienced cichlid keepers but may not be ideal for beginners due to its aggression.
