Pseudotropheus estherae
Common name: Red Zebra Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa. Found in rocky shorelines of the lake.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 24 - 28 °C
- pH: 7.8 - 8.6
- Aquarium size: 200 liters+ (requires a tank with plenty of rocks, caves, and hiding spots)
Adult fish size: 10 - 12 cm
Diet: Omnivore. Feed a diet rich in vegetable matter such as spirulina-based flakes or pellets, along with occasional live or frozen protein-based foods like brine shrimp or daphnia. Avoid overfeeding high-protein foods to prevent health issues.
Tankmates: Aggressive and territorial, especially when breeding. Suitable tankmates include other Mbuna species that can hold their own in a similarly rocky setup. Avoid delicate or slow-moving fish. Overcrowding with adequate filtration can help reduce aggression.
Note: The Red Zebra Cichlid is known for its vibrant orange-red coloration, though color variations exist, including blue morphs. Males are generally more vividly colored than females. This species is active and territorial, requiring a well-maintained environment with stable water parameters and high oxygen levels. Regular water changes and a diet high in plant matter are crucial for their health. Ideal for aquarists experienced with Mbuna cichlids.
