Puntius denisonii
Common name: Denison’s Barb, Red-Line Torpedo Barb
Origin: India, specifically the Western Ghats region.
Optimal living conditions:
- Temperature: 22 - 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 - 7.5
- Aquarium size: 100 liters+ (a well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming space is ideal)
Adult fish size: 12 - 15 cm
Diet: Omnivore. Feed a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Include some vegetable matter like spinach or algae-based wafers to provide balance.
Tankmates: Peaceful, but active swimmers. They do well with other peaceful community species like tetras, rasboras, and smaller catfish. Avoid keeping with very small fish, as Denison's Barbs are active and may chase them. They also prefer to be in groups of 5 or more to feel secure.
Note: The Denison’s Barb is known for its vibrant coloration, especially the distinctive red line running along its body. It is a social and lively fish, thriving in a well-planted tank with open swimming areas. They are best kept in schools, and their energetic nature makes them a stunning addition to peaceful, active community tanks. Be sure to provide them with a stable environment, as they are sensitive to water quality changes.
